Take the Immunity Quiz

Is your immune system controlling your social life?

immune system Nov 05, 2020

Researchers at the University of Virginia found that blocking a cytokine in lab animals could make them less socially interactive.  When they blocked interferon gamma in flies, zebrafish, mice and rats, they became less social.  During the experiment, they found increasing levels of this cytokine in animals who were being more social.

The researchers are hoping for a deeper understanding of our brain’s function, but really hope that these findings can lead to therapies for brain conditions like autism and schizophrenia which interfere with social function.
